If we didn't have the right to "keep and bear arms", how much more freedom would that give our ever-intrusive government? When all the chaff is blown away, isn't our last recourse as citizens of this nation firearms to protect ourselves, our children, our freedoms? Words are great, that's what politicians are good at, but there may come the day when those words subjugate each and every one of us beyond our capacity for toleration.
If "my" government were to someday get that bad, believe me, I'd be in the front lines with whatever firearm I could find. My children and my children's children WILL have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. No matter what.
The Columbine massacre and other such problems are the fault of the parents who are too busy being materialistic and selfish to properly raise their children. That's my opinion, I could be wrong.

Witch Doctor's 2 cents:
"Sure, take my guns away. Congress, our adulterer-in-chief, the sillytary, etc. already use the Constitution like toilet paper. As an American veteran having been overseas, I've seen what happens in places that do not have an armed citizenry. I agree, Columbine High School and the related incidents should never have happened. Taking away the rights of law-abiding Americans to own guns is not going to change the reality of our country in this day and age. The current crop of kids doesn't respect the facts of life that previous generations were raised with. If we take away the guns, they'll just use something else or will find an underground source of weaponry. Banning handguns did nothing to make NYC any safer. Don't think that it would make the country as a unit any safer. Sure, take my guns - I know how to make replacements.
That is the reality of life in the "Deluded States of America, Land of the Free (if you can afford to be), Home of the Brave (although more likely depraved). Love it or hate it, various forms of prohibition won't change it. The only way to change it is to change the fundamental belief structures currently in place. Educate if possible, incarcarate or terminate when needed. This country is so hung up on beibng inoffensive that its people have forgotten the basic tenets of life. You can't make everyone happy, some people will do the wrong thing regardless of how they come up, and you can't save everyone. Call me old fashioned, but I feel it is time to return to frontier justice and looking out for yourself. The government won't do anything productive to change the situation.
